Democrats also took a shaky stance toward marriage equality in their 2008 party platform. Vague language such as support for the “full inclusion of gays and lesbians in the life of our nation,” and a pledge to “seek equal responsibilities, benefits, and protections for these families” tried to sound inclusive without clearly defining what institutions the Democratic Party approved LGBTQ+ people being a part of. Yet when it came to practically defining marriage equality on the federal level, the party took a careful stance by opposing DOMA but leaving it up to the states, not the federal government, to decide the legality of same-sex marriage. Democratic frontrunner Senator Barack Obama supported civil unions, not same-sex marriage. He also advocated for the repeal of DADT and DOMA. His position concerning what institutions to support for LGBTQ+ people evolved over his time in office after he won the election. The LGBTQ+ community supported his campaign in overwhelming numbers because they hoped that Obama would shift the national focus toward acceptance of same-sex unions and help to normalize the idea of equal protection under the law.
